British Plan to replace Double-decker buses with Super Lorries

British Super Lorries
London : A new breed of monster truck almost twice the size of a ¬double-decker bus is set to thunder down British streets.

Plans for the lorries – 7ft longer than the current limit - have sparked a -furious road safety row.

Green campaigners say they will cause more accidents and jams. But super¬markets claim they will actually CUT carbon emissions by 100,000 tonnes a year and save £1.8bn on fuel because there will be fewer on the road.

They want to increase the length of delivery trucks from 16.5 metres (54ft) to 18.5 m (60ft 8in). The 44-tonne weight ¬limit will stay the same.

Operators say bulky but light goods fill up ¬existing trailers before they reach the limit.

The new trucks are longer than controversial “bendy” buses and opponents say they are more prone to tail swings at junctions and crosswinds on exposed roads. Pressure group Freight On Rail said: “This is being pushed by big lorry interests and safety issues are not being taken into account.”
