Tehran : Iran's military said on Sunday it had shot down a US reconnaissance drone aircraft in eastern Iran.
Iran's Arabic-language Al-Alam state television network quoted the unnamed source as saying. "Iran's military has downed an intruding RQ-170 American drone in eastern Iran, the spy drone, which has been downed with little damage, was seized by the Iranian armed forces".
According to the FARS news agency, Iran said it would "respond to US drone violations of its airspace outside Iran's borders".
According to Washington Post, A secret U.S. surveillance drone that went missing last week in western Afghanistan appears to have crashed in Iran, in what may be the first case of such an aircraft ending up in the hands of an adversary.
The stealth aircraft is designed to penetrate enemy air defenses that could see and possibly shoot down less-sophisticated Predator and Reaper drones.
The WP website also claimed that the stealthy RQ-170 drone played a critical role in surveillance of the alleged compound in Pakistan where Osama bin Laden was said to be hiding.
