ISLAMABAD: A military court has found seven men guilty of involvement in an attack on army headquarters and sentenced one of them, a retired soldier, to death, a Pakistani official said.
The October 2009 siege in Rawalpindi lasted 22 hours, left nine militants and 14 others dead, and deeply embarrassed Pakistan’s security establishment.
One former soldier — identified only as ”Aqeel” alias ”Dr. Usman” — was handed the death penalty. He is believed to have led the attack.
A military official said Saturday four other defendants — another ex-soldier and three civilians — received life imprisonment. Two civilians were handed seven-year prison terms.
The official requested anonymity because of the issue’s sensitivity. He didn’t say when the verdicts were rendered.
